Rarest Crosley ever made. 1 of only 28 Built!
The rarest Crosley in existence! The Crosley Skorpion is one of 30 produced by John Wells and designed by Ralph Roberts, a well-known designer who was with le baron in the 1930's. The car is fully restored and just fabulous. The greatest microcar find yet! This one has only 487 miles since it was totally restored. The entire car, including the chassis was dismantled and rebuilt. The underside of this car looks as good as it does on top with all fresh and clean suspension, no grease, no rotten rubber, no rust, not even on the bare metal parts. It has reproduction bias-ply white stripe tires, new upholstery and beautiful paint.
The 1952 Crosley Skorpion was built by Powel Crosley, a manufacturer of radio's and refrigerators, began manufacturing two-cylinder automobiles in 1939 in Indiana and Ohio. The Crosley cars were tiny, quirky and advertised as 'America's most needed car.' Originally the cars were displayed and purchased through department stores, such as Macys. After several orders were place, the company opened up their own dealer showroom in New York.
By the early 1950s, sales were slow. The last Crosley line was introduced in 1951 and would remain essentially unchanged until production ended in July of 1952. On March 28th of 1953, Crosley Motors merged with Aerojet Engineering Company of Azusa, California, both companies being members of the General Tire and Rubber Company.
This particular car is a Crosley Scorpion. It has a Crosley 4-cylinder engine and an all-fiberglass body. The cars were designed by Ralph Roberts (whose resume included work with LeBaron in the 1930s) and were built by John Wills. Wills had worked with fiberglass and plastics since 1936.
