1968 Porsche Spyder 550 Replica
The model Porsche 550 Spyder was introduced at the 1953 Paris Auto Show. The 550 was very low to the ground, in order to be efficient for racing. Perhaps the most famous of the first 90 Porsche 550's built was James Dean's "Little Bastard" The vehicle was a 4 cylinder 2.5L 2 seat sports car with a manual transmission. James Dean's love for speed, racing and “living on the edge” were no secret. When the opportunity arose to upgrade from his previous Porsche to the new 550 Spyder , he jumped at the idea. He called on George Barris, known as King of the Kustomizers (Barris later built the original Batmobile & Munster Koach), to get to work on the Spyder. Barris added custom tartan covered seats to the new Spyder. The large “130” racing number on the doors, hood and engine cover, and the now infamous “Little Bastard” badge, were applied by another auto legend– master pin striper and customizer Dean Jeffries who had a shop next to George Barris. This vehicle on display is a tribute to the life and legend James Dean was and still is.
