1939 Cadillac Series 61 4-Door ConvertibleThe 1939 Cadillac Convertible Sedan represents the culmination of young Harley Earls efforts throughout the 1930s to transform the marques styling from rather conventional, albeit quite elegant, late 20s interpretations to the leading edge of automotive design. Earl aggressively moved away from the upright and fragmented earlier designs and wrapped the Cadillac in ever-more curvaceous forms, introducing laid-back windshields and grilles, bullet headlights, pontoon fenders and sloping rooflines with integrated trunks. A new designer, young William L. Mitchell, built on Earls work with the 1938 model 61, which evolved the following year into the distinctive and mature 1939 model as featured here. This is an extraordinary example of the big Cadillac V-8, one of only seven thought to survive today. Finished in formal Black with a Black top, it remains in a pristine show-quality state. Earl and Mitchell styling cues abound, from the square-backed pontoon fenders with dual side-mounts, to the ;No-Draft; front quarter windows to the chromed Art Deco front end detailing. The interior is gorgeous in deeply padded Black leather upholstery and plush Black carpeting, a chromed center grille that repeats the front ends horizontal bar design, and ivory-colored steering wheel and switchgear.Cadillacs V-8 was one of the smoothest-running powerplants of its time, as the highly detailed engine in this car easily demonstrates. Driving through an all-synchromesh manual gearbox, the V-8 powers the car with the ease of a much larger engine, a major factor in the disappearance of earlier 12- and 16-cylinder engines.Extremely low production numbers have combined with the passing decades to make this immaculate 1939 Cadillac Convertible Sedan an exceptionally valuable American collector car.Highlights:- Black with Black- Gorgeous Black leather interior- Dual side-mount spares- Cadillac V-8- 1 of 140 Built.
